Crowns are, in general, tooth-shaped restorations used to improve the general appearance of teeth. The crowns serve their purpose by completely covering the visible tooth surface. These crowns are made from a wide variety of materials, but we will focus on porcelain associated with zirconia crowns (PFZ). This crown has become one of the preferred options for dentists and their patients. The reason for this preference is that this type of crown combines strength, durability, and aesthetics.


Porcelain attached to the zirconia crown is produced by porcelain combined with zirconium oxide. The zirconia base has a white shade and is layered with porcelain to coincide with the final restoration. The porcelain associated with zirconia crowns is designed using computer-aided design or computer-aided manufacturing technology. Crowns are used for restorative purposes that improve functional and aesthetic qualities. Unlike metal-based crowns, porcelain fused to zirconia crowns allow more light to pass through them and this makes them more suitable for use on anterior teeth.


Zirconium is also preferred by dentists because this material does not produce any chemical reaction in the mouth (Zio2 is biocampathis). This is an important factor because some reactions damage the crown or can cause allergies in the long run. Zirconia is an element fusing with porcelain because the bonding process between porcelain & zirconia is strengthened with other materials such as gold. PFZ crowns are also less likely to fracture than porcelain with gold.


Having too much in the mouth exposes you to the risk of exposure to metal alloys with different electrical potentials. Since saliva can act as a conductor, a slight electric current can occur between metal restorations.
